KLIK visited the Covenant of Mayors in Brussels – the future of Europe is built locally!

After the EU Peers conference, which brought together One-Stop Shops (OSS) from across Europe and where DOOR and KLIK participated as leaders of the Zagreb and Križevci OSS for energy renovation, KLIK also attended the Covenant of Mayors – Europe event in Brussels. This gathering brought together more than 700 participants and over 150 mayors from all over Europe, with the aim of emphasizing the message that the future of Europe is built locally – in its villages, towns, and regions.

During the ceremony, the winners of the Covenant of Mayors Awards were announced, highlighting leading pioneers in the transition to clean heating. Discussions also focused on strengthening Europe’s climate resilience, particularly in the context of increasingly frequent heatwaves, floods, and fires affecting the entire continent.

The message from the Presidents of the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European Committee of the Regions was clear: local action drives Europe’s climate ambitions, resilience, and prosperity. Cities and municipalities give meaning to Europe through their voluntary commitment and concrete actions within the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy – for more than 15 years.

The subsequent panel highlighted good examples of energy transition from Getafe in Spain – a city that the KLIK team visited this year, invited by Energy Cities, as part of the crOss renoHome project – as well as from Reggio Emilia, Stockholm, Mannheim, and Croatia, represented by REGEA – the North-West Croatia Regional Energy and Climate Agency. These examples showed how cities and regions are addressing energy poverty, greening urban areas, and strengthening resilience.

EU Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, stated: “Local and regional leaders cannot succeed in isolation – we are building a new, integrated European framework for climate resilience and risk management.”

The conclusion of the event was a shared and powerful call to action: let us empower cities, municipalities, and regions through more effective multilevel governance, locally driven solutions, and stable sources of financing – so that together we can secure a sustainable future for Europe.
